Use real-life situations to create a memorable training session
The challenge — creating a memorable training session that resonates with all of your students — no matter their learning style.
The solution — involving your drivers in an exercise or activity that includes a real-life situation.
Addressing a real-life situation gives your drivers the opportunity to think about and apply the material presented during your training session. It also helps maintain a certain level of interest in the training session and reinforces the lesson.
Start this exercise by dividing your class into small discussion groups, preferably three or four drivers in each group.
Present the situation your drivers need to address and/or solve. When selecting a situation for your drivers to address, choose one that covers a common problem or issue. General topics that work well with this type of exercise include:
- Accident prevention,
- Emergencies (accidents, vehicle breakdowns, etc.),
- Defensive driving,
- Customer service,
- Road rage, and
- Roadside inspections.
Present the situation to your drivers. Give the groups a limited amount of time (typically, about 10 to 15 minutes) to discuss the situation and come to a solution.
At the conclusion of the time allowed for discussion, each group should select a spokesperson to present their solution to the class.
Encourage constructive and focused discussion and comment from all participants.
Key to remember: Use of various learning activities, including real-life situations can assist your drivers in retaining the information presented during your training session.
