Looking for a way to enhance driver training? Try active participation
Studies show that students learn and retain more information when they are an active participant in a training session. Delivery methods, such as demonstration and simulation, can help you get a point across and help your drivers remember what they have learned.
Demonstration
Demonstration can help drivers relate to a situation they may face or a skill they may need to perform. Typically, demonstration is performed by the instructor and can be used on just about any skill that is required of your drivers.
Some skills that lend themselves to demonstration include:
- Conducting a thorough vehicle inspection,
- Properly securing cargo on a vehicle, or
- Safely lifting a heavy box.
As you demonstrate a skill, encourage group involvement. Ask questions such as:
- “Why is it important that I ...?”
- “What could happen if I don’t ...?”
Simulation
Simulation takes this process one step further by having drivers apply what they have learned during the session.
Some of the skills your drivers could perform in a simulation exercise include:
- Checking a vehicle’s tires for proper inflation,
- Properly securing a load on a vehicle, or
- Verifying the accuracy of a shipping document by comparing it to a sample load.
After all of your drivers have completed the simulation exercise, discuss what was done well, specifying how it was done well.
Also discuss what was done incorrectly and explain what should have been done differently.
Key to remember: Use of varied instructional methods can aid in ensuring drivers retain the lesson presented during your training session.
