Recruitment burnout? 5 steps to reignite the hiring flame
“In times of crisis, belonging and human connection is all that matters,” said Miguel Joey Aviles at the 2023 Talent Conference hosted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
Aviles said that in the talent management arena, every week is a new crisis. Consider this alarming statistic shared by Aviles: 98 percent of HR professionals self-reported that they were experiencing burnout.
“Challenges with mental health are at an all-time high,” he added.
Story of survival and hope
Aviles shared a personal story of how his family survived a devasting hurricane in his home country of Puerto Rico several years ago. He was moved by their perseverance and positivity.
Based on that, he crafted a passionate message for HR professionals who are struggling with burnout in the hiring and recruiting sectors. The theme comes from the acronym A.L.I.V.E. (full name “We are Alive”).
Although this positive play on words could apply to other workplace challenges, for those in recruitment, it provides a simple five-step approach to begin or regroup. It’s a launching point when the chips are down.
5 pillars of the “We are Alive” framework:
- Accelerate Self-Awareness: Self-awareness and feedback are gifts. Awareness is transformative. You can put a spotlight on your own blind spot. It must be intentional just as self-growth. We first belong to ourselves, and then to other people.
- Leverage Belonging: Many people are in their own silos experiencing isolation and loneliness. How do we close the gap? How do we connect? From exclusion to inclusion. Follow a strategy of seeking and sharing when people are feeling burned out. Teams that have a sense of belonging perform better.
- Instill Gratefulness: Gratefulness is a form of resilience. Happiness is a superpower. How do you help your workforce? Consider what went well.
- Value Vulnerability: If we want to innovate, we need to be vulnerable enough to be willing to fail. Vulnerability is about normalizing the fact that we’re not perfect.
- Elevate and Empower: Take into consideration the intersectionality of all the team members. There isn’t one type of success. Success means something different for everyone.
Key to remember: Focusing on a five-step positive approach based on the acronym A.L.I.V.E. can inspire burnt out HR professionals.
