Keep it constructive: Guidelines for effective driver training conversations
Providing a forum for constructive discussion during a training session can be beneficial to both you and your drivers. These benefits include:
- Reinforcing the lesson being presented,
- Clearing up any misunderstanding of the lesson, and
- Motivating drivers to effectively use what they have learned.
Discussion can be detrimental to a training session if it becomes a forum for driver criticism and complaints that can’t be addressed or resolved by the training being presented.
One way to make sure discussion remains constructive is by posting a list of discussion guidelines prior to the beginning of the training session. They should be reviewed with your drivers prior to opening your session to discussion.
Fourteen guidelines to implement
The following are 14 guidelines that you can use in your training sessions.
- Respect others.
- Be truthful.
- One speaker at a time.
- Don’t interrupt.
- Comments made here stay here.
- Be specific.
- Practice active listening.
- Discussion must remain relevant to the subject/issue.
- Keep your cool. Anger and arguing do not contribute to constructive discussion.
- Don’t pass judgment. Phrases such as “yes, but” and “it will never work” are not allowed.
- Constructively criticize ideas, not people.
- Do not retaliate.
- Don’t respond with sarcasm.
- Keep communication lines open.
Key to remember: Setting and following clear discussion guidelines can make the training experience a positive one for all involved.
