TWIC renewals available online
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) just made the process of renewing a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC®) a little easier.
Beginning August 11, 2022, TWIC holders are able renew their credential online (https://universalenroll.dhs.gov/programs/twic) rather than go to an enrollment center. Workers who wish to retain an active TWIC must renew the security credential every five years.
Who can renew online?
TWIC holders may use the online renewal process as early as one year before and as late as one year after the expiration date appearing on the TWIC card.
If the TWIC expiration date has exceeded one year, the holder is considered a new enrollee and is subject to the standard in-person enrollment process.
In the event of a name change since enrollment, card holders must contact the TSA Help Center at (855) DHS-UES1 ((855) 347-8371) to update their name before renewing online.
Are in-person renewals still an option?
TWIC holders are given the option of renewing online or in person at an enrollment center.
Even though most TWIC enrollment centers accept walk-ins, TSA encourages those wanting to renew in person to schedule an appointment with an enrollment center in their region to save time.
When is a TWIC required?
Shortly after 9/11, regulations were put in place to prevent an unauthorized person from getting into secure areas of a vessel or facility that is required to have a security plan under U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rules.
A secure area is an area that has security measures in place for access control. The owner or operator of the facility must tell visitors what these areas are during their work. It is generally any place inside the outer-most access gate.
A restricted area is a part of a secure area that needs more limited access and higher security. Under the maritime security requirements, an owner or operator must designate certain areas as restricted. For example, storage areas for cargo are restricted under the USCG rules. These areas must be clearly marked. No one may enter a restricted area unless authorized by the owner or operator, even if the individual holds a TWIC.
Mariners and other workers, such as truck drivers, who need access to secured areas within regulated facilities or vessels must have a TWIC
What agencies manage TWIC?
TSA and the USCG administer the program together:
- TSA conducts a background investigation of anyone wishing to hold a TWIC, and
- USCG regulates the use of the TWIC at maritime facilities and in vessels.
What does the TWIC background check involve?
New enrollees must complete an application and must visit a TWIC application center where they:
- Provide required documentation and identification,
- Have their fingerprints and facial photo taken, and
- Pay a fee.
TSA will assess the enrollee’s eligibility, including U.S. Citizenship or immigration status, disqualifying criminal offenses, and mental capacity. The agency also investigates whether the applicant poses a security threat using Interpol, terrorist watchlists, and other relevant databases.
Key to remember: Workers, such as truck drivers, who need access to secured areas within U.S. seaports must obtain and continue to renew a TWIC.
