Recognize the need for PPE retraining
2021-07-01T05:00:00Z
You might assume that employees know when and how to use personal protective equipment (PPE), but in reality, they may not. Employers must train each employee who is required to use PPE, covering at least the following:
- When PPE is required;
- What PPE must be used;
- How to properly don, doff, adjust, and wear PPE;
- Limitations of the PPE; and
- Proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal.
Retraining needs
If you believe that anyone who was already trained does not have the required understanding and skill, that employee must be retrained. Circumstances where retraining is required include, but are not limited to, the following:
- A change in the workplace (equipment, tools, chemicals) requires further training.
- A change in the type of PPE issued requires further training.
- An employee’s knowledge or use of PPE indicates that the employee lacks the required understanding or skill.
You are the primary observer regarding PPE use. If someone fails to wear PPE, a simple reminder may suffice, but if you notice situations where retraining may be necessary, alert your safety manager or conduct the training yourself, if appropriate.
