Use these 4 tips to boost mental health

While our biological makeup and what we’re dealing with at any given moment make an impact on our emotional well-being, we can take action to strengthen our mental health. As May is Mental Health month, it’s a great time for you and your employees to seek out activities that support well-being.
These actions can bring benefits such as healthier relationships and improved self-esteem, as well as increased resilience and personal satisfaction.
Steps that improve well-being
- Getting enough rest. Rest lets our brains recharge, gives us energy, and improves our mood. Adults should get seven to nine hours of restful sleep each night, but rest is about more than sleep. We also benefit from brief periods of rest when we’re awake. These quiet periods allow time for reflective thought, and could include meditating, deep breathing, walking in the sun, gentle stretching, or just doing nothing for a little while.
- Exercising. Exercising eases stress and anxiety to improve our mood and gives us a sense of accomplishment. Exercising releases feel-good chemicals like serotonin and endorphins, reduces tension, and increases energy levels. While jogging and playing tennis are certainly great ways to get moving, exercise doesn’t need to be strenuous to be effective. Daily 10-minute walks can make a huge difference in mental health.
- Connecting with others. We are social by nature, and healthy relationships have a major impact on our mental health. We benefit from connecting with friends and family members, as well as when we join groups based around shared interests or hobbies.
- Trying new things. New experiences help us grow, stimulate our minds, and expose us to potentially enjoyable opportunities. “New things” could include new activities, foods, routines, and environments.
Key to remember: Making it priority to get enough rest, exercise, connect with others, and try new things can make a positive impact on mental health.
