Resolve to respond correctly...

Whenever you handle loads of hazardous materials there is a chance an emergency an emergency can occur. If it does, there needs to be the correct emergency response information for the load for help responders.

When must emergency response information be available?

Emergency response information must be provided whenever or wherever hazmat is in transport and at facilities where hazmat is:

  • Loaded for transportation,
  • Stored during the transport process, or
  • Handled in any way during the transport process.

What are the requirements?

At a minimum, make sure you help responders understand:

  • The basic description and technical name of the hazmat.
  • Immediate hazards to health.
  • Risks of fire or explosion.
  • Immediiate methods for handling fires.
  • Methods for handling spills.
  • Preliminary first aid measures.
  • An emergency response phone number they can call for further assistance.

With the New Year, resolve to understand and comply with immediate reporting requirements. You can do so by asking your employer for more specifics and other emergency action plan documents.
