E-Verify+ is another step closer to launch
A streamlined E-Verify system, designed to make life easier for employers and employees, is coming closer to becoming a reality.
On May 29, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), announced that E-Verify+ is entering a trail phase.
The enhanced system will:
- Allow employees to directly enter information and documentation into a mobile-friendly portal.
- Allow employees to carry their employment verification status with them from job to job.
- Eliminate the need for employers to enter information from an employee’s Form I-9 into the E-Verify system, review documentation, and contact employees when there is a problem.
- Allow employers to download an employee’s Form I-9 and documentation from the company’s E-Verify account.
Confirming employment eligibility
E-Verify is a web-based system nearly 1 million employers use to electronically confirm the employment eligibility of new employees. Use of the system is required for some federal contractors and under some state laws. For other employers, it is optional.
The system compares information on employee’s Form I-9 with records available to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.
When information from the employee’s Form I-9 matches the information in the system, employment is authorized. If there is an information mismatch, employers receive notice of a tentative nonconfirmation.
Employers then need to notify employees of the mismatch within 10 days, provide a copy of the Further Action Notice, and discuss next steps. If the employee does not take action on the mismatch, employers must close the case.
No more Further Action Notices
With E-Verify+, employers will no longer need to deliver Further Action Notices.
When the employee’s documentation can’t be immediately verified, the USCIS will communicate directly with the employee.
Less room for error
Because E-Verify+ will allow employees to enter their information directly into the system, the USCIS expects fewer data entry errors to occur.
In addition, the employee’s information will be saved in the system. Workers will be able to carry their employment verification status to future employers, eliminating the need to fill out a new Form I-9 every time they start a new job.
Some features stay the same
As with E-Verify, E-Verify+:
- Will be free to use.
- Will provide results in three to five seconds.
- Will use photo and Social Security number matching capabilities.
- Will be available online 24 hours a day.
- Will allow cases to be managed from one location, the E-Verify account.
Employee benefits
The USCIS notes that E-Verify plus also gives employees the ability to:
- Have more control over their personal information.
- Select and upload preferred documentation.
- Electronically complete and submit the Form I-9 and documentation from any mobile device.
- Stay updated with automatic notifications throughout the employment eligibility verification process.
- Carry employment eligibility verification to future employers who participate in E-Verify+.
Key to remember: E-Verify+, an enhanced version of the online employment eligibility system, is entering a trial phase and should eventually make the employment verification process easier.
