Dear HR, Please take care of your own mental health
I don’t need to tell you how rough the past 14 months have been.
Maybe you’ve been managing a group of overtaxed essential workers. Perhaps you helped a team transition to remote work and (maybe?) back to the office again.
You’ve likely helped your organization’s management team make tough decisions, draft contingency plans, and craft new policies.
You’ve listened as employees vented about the stresses of work and family life during a pandemic, and you’ve supported their well-being in a myriad of ways.
But what have you done for you lately?
In an October 2020 survey by Reward Gateway, 71 percent of HR professionals surveyed across the U.S., U.K., and Australia said 2020 was the most stressful year of their career.
HR professionals have been the ones taking care of others in their organizations. To combat the stress and anxiety of the pandemic, some employers provided increased access to mental health benefits and employee assistance programs (EAPs), and some implemented flexible scheduling. And just who did the work behind the scenes to accomplish all that? You, HR professionals!
Think of your mental health as everyone’s mental health
As hard as it may be to take time off, utilize your EAP, or simply turn off your work brain and meditate for five minutes every day. By setting an example and taking care of yourself, your employees will realize they have permission to take care of themselves.
You might feel selfish for taking a walk in the middle of the workday or not immediately responding to a work email after hours. But rather than feeling any shame, it’s actually better if you’re loud and proud about it.
Arianna Huffington, founder and CEO of Thrive Global and founder of The Huffington Post, addressed the issue of self-care during a January webinar for the salary on-demand platform Even, saying, “When it starts at the top, there is like a cascading effect of cultural permission and the recognition that the connection between well-being and performance applies across the whole organization.”
Take Arianna’s advice and take care of yourselves, HR friends. Your whole organization is watching.
