Why are there so few women truckers? ATRI study identifies top barriers
Women are drawn to commercial driving for the potential earnings, which are typically equivalent to their male counterparts, a recent study revealed. However, wages may not be enough. This same research by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) identified six challenges to recruiting and retaining women truckers.
Challenges for women truckers
ATRI identified the following six core challenges that deter women from pursuing careers in trucking:
- Negative industry image and perception
- Inability to complete truck driver training due to:
- Cost
- Lack of driving skills, ability, or knowledge
- Childcare issues
- Excessive travel to/from school
- Unsatisfactory motor carrier company culture, citing:
- Inadequate communication with drivers, and
- Lack of recognition/appreciation initiatives
- The over-the-road driver lifestyle (home time and unhealthy habits)
- Limited parking and restroom facility access
- Gender harassment and discrimination with concerns over personal safety
The study didn’t stop with just identifying the obstacles. ATRI’s report provides an action plan for the trucking industry to help increase the relatively low number of women in trucking.
ATRI’s analysis found that trucking companies that implemented initiatives to recruit and retain women employed a higher percentage of women as drivers than those that did not (8.1 percent versus 5.0 percent).
