Not all slings are alike, so slings must be selected in accordance with their intended use, based upon the size and type of load, and the environmental conditions of the workplace. Slings can be divided into six types and each with its own particular advantages and disadvantages:
- Alloy steel chain slings
- Wire rope slings
- Metal mesh slings
- Natural and synthetic fiber rope slings
- Synthetic web slings
- Synthetic round slings
