New fillable form available for reporting releases to the Chemical Safety Board
Earlier this year, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) announced revisions to the new CSB Accidental Release Form and the instructions for filling it out. However, the CSB only recently posted the fillable form on its website.
The CSB’s Accidental Release Reporting Rule was finalized on February 21, 2020. The new regulations at 40 CFR 1604 require facilities to report an accidental chemical release within eight hours of a qualifying event. Facilities have three options for reporting. They can choose one of the following:
- Contact the CSB by phoning (202) 261-7600 and answer the series of questions found on the reporting form.
- Download, fill out, and submit the form by email: report@csb.gov.
- For facilities that have already reported to the National Response Center (NRC) for the same incident under CERCLA reporting rules at 40 CFR §302.6, email the CSB with the NRC report identification number to report@csb.gov. You don’t have to fill out the CSB form in addition to the NRC report.
What does the CSB want to know?
In addition to providing contact information for yourself and your facility, you’ll also need to share information on the accidental release: What was released and in what quantity? When did it happen, and what were the consequences?
