Expert Insights: Don't be afraid to ask
Ever wonder where to find an answer to a question? Life is fraught with questions, and people, including HR professionals, are looking for answers. They don’t, however, have to go it alone. They can, and often do, ask for help.
HR professionals are great networkers. They have colleagues in the industry to whom they can ask questions, and they generally don’t hesitate to.
Asking for help doesn’t mean that someone isn’t smart enough. It isn’t a sign of weakness.
Sometimes, though, people waver before asking for help because they don’t want to be seen as less than perfect, particularly when it comes to their job. People need to feel and appear to be in control. They dislike being vulnerable and pride themselves on being independent.
Folks feel the need to do things all by themselves, no matter what, because the vulnerability isn’t worth the cost of accepting help.
But asking for help is far braver than trying to muddle through and waste time. Embrace the fact that it’s good to know that you don’t know all the answers. No one does. Don’t ignore all the knowledge around you.
Fear not
The first step might be to admit that you need help, and this can be tough. Then you have to admit that you need help from someone else.
Asking for help shows you’re open to growth, as you’re reaching out to learn something. Find someone you trust and who will likely have the answers. This could be a total stranger, or it could be a long-time friend, depending on the question.
When you step up to ask:
- Do so politely,
- Provide enough information, and
- Give some notice so the person can think through your request.
