EHS Monthly Round Up - April 2023
Hi everyone! Welcome to the monthly news roundup video, where we’ll review the most impactful environmental, health, and safety news. Please view the content links in the transcript to take a deeper dive into the topics I’ll be covering today. With that said, let’s get started!
First, let’s take a look at what’s happening in safety and health. Strategies for reducing whole-body vibration in golf course maintenance tasks are covered in a new NIOSH health hazard evaluation report. Recommendations include rotating employees between tasks and establishing a procedure for reporting health concerns.
OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program, or VPP, recognizes workplaces that demonstrate best practices in safety and health management and serve as industry models. OSHA wants to modernize and improve the program and opened a comment period for public input.
OSHA’s Personal Protective Equipment in Construction proposed rule left the OMB on April 4. It’s expected to be published in the Federal Register any day and will include a public comment period.
Construction safety was the focus of two events held the week of April 17. The National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents focused on construction hazards such as falling objects or tools and swing hazards from cranes. National Work Zone Awareness Week encouraged safe driving through highway work zones.
OSHA launched an outreach campaign in Region 5 to educate employers and workers of excavation and trenching hazards. In 2022, 39 people died while performing trenching and excavation work.
And finally, turning to environmental news, EPA proposed the third phase of its Clean Trucks Plan. It will add more requirements for vehicle and engine manufacturers, sellers, and importers in an effort to further decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
Thanks for tuning in to the monthly news roundup. We’ll see you next month!
