What's happening with Canada's temporary TDG certificates?
In March 2020, Transport Canada issued six temporary certificates which relaxed the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations to minimize impact to stakeholders affected by COVID-19.
Two of the temporary certificates — one related to expired training and the other related to certain means of containment (MOCs) that do not comply with testing and inspection requirements — expired as of January 31, 2021.
There are still four current active temporary certificates related to the transportation of dangerous goods in Canada. The active certificates are as follows:
- Temporary certificate TU 0752.3: Hand sanitizer. This certificate relaxes requirements for the transportation of hand sanitizer by road vehicle, railway vehicle, or a vessel between two points in Canada.
- Temporary certificate TU 0753.3: Canada Post Corporation authorization - Shipping hand sanitizer by air. This certificate authorizes Canada Post Corporation to transport hand sanitizer by air in order to help provide medical supplies to remote areas.
- Temporary certificate TU 0754.2: Transporting hand sanitizer by air. This certificate allows the handling, offering for transport, or transportation of hand sanitizer by air under certain conditions.
- Temporary certificate TU 0764.1: Test samples for COVID-19. This certificate relaxes the requirements for the handling, offering for transport, or transporting of dangerous goods that are COVID-19 test samples under certain conditions.
It’s expected these temporary certificates will be active through December 31, 2021, unless canceled in writing by Canada’s Minister of Transportation.
