Issue daily reminders to reinforce safety
Employees sometimes receive safety information (or misinformation) from coworkers or through the company grapevine. This can make consistent enforcement of safety procedures a challenge.
To make sure employees receive correct information, consider issuing a daily safety message to your team. A daily safety thought is an easy and effective means of relaying important company safety practices and procedures.
The information can be delivered in just a few moments before the shift, or it could be posted on a bulletin board in the department, or on a whiteboard in the break room.
The message should be simple, yet reinforce company safety rules and practices. For example:
- “Safety rules protect you from injuries”
- “Verify that machine guards are in place”
- “Report all injuries and hazards”
- “Never take shortcuts”
- “Do not block exits”
- “Take the time to do it right”
- “Always wear required PPE”
These reminders should encourage employees to think about the importance of their role in safety. Some reminders can tell them what not to do, but most should remind workers of correct methods. For example, rather than saying “Never use damaged tools” you might offer a reminder like “Check tools for damage before use.”
Also, make sure employees know that they can contact you if they have any questions. One reminder might even be “If not certain, ask for help.” Workers should let you know if they notice any safety issues.
Providing brief daily reminders is a great way to reinforce your company’s emphasis on safety and should help reduce accidents.
