Do more in 2024 with effective goals
2023-12-27T06:00:00Z
The New Year is filled with possibilities, but when goals for the coming months lack structure it’s easy for them to fade fast.
Most resolutions last only around 3.74 months, according to a recent survey from Forbes. To set goals that have staying power, take time to craft them carefully. Share these tips with employees and managers to help them establish objectives they can achieve.
6 tips for goal setting
- Understand the why. Think about what is driving you to set this goal and how you’ll benefit. This makes it personal. You have a better chance of achieving a goal if it is meaningful to you. If you want to become a better public speaker, for example, think about how this will enhance your career and help increase your self-confidence.
- Break it down. A big goal should be broken down into small steps. These milestones provide a sense of accomplishment and also hold you accountable for continuing to work toward your ultimate objective. If your goal is to form a relationship with a mentor, set milestones for identifying potential mentors and reaching out to them. A wellness goal can be broken down into smaller pieces as well. If you want to run a 5K, you might start with a walking goal, and then combine walking and running for a certain distance.
- Create an action plan. Decide how you will incorporate your goal into everyday life. When will you reach out to mentors? How will you find time to run? Is there an organization you can join or a course you can take that can help you improve your public speaking skills?
- Measure your progress. Set specific benchmarks so you can review progress throughout the year. This shows how far you have come and can alert you if you’re falling off track. For example, perhaps you want to identify three potential mentors by the end of January and contact two of them by the end of February. Maybe you want to walk or run on two days of the week during January and three in February. You can identify two or three public speaking groups in January, and start visiting them in February. Additional milestones can be set the other months of the year, or every other month.
- Prepare for obstacles. There are bound to be setbacks. Don’t be derailed by them. Remember why you set this goal in the first place. Reevaluate your milestones and adjust them. Ask coworkers, friends, or your manager for help in getting back on track.
- Be patient. It will take time and effort to reach your ultimate goal. Motivate yourself along the way by celebrating milestones that demonstrate how far you’ve come.
Key to remember: To reach your goals in the New Year, understand your motivation, set specific milestones, and try again if things go off track.
