Celebrate heart health month with these activities
February is a great time to emphasize heart health and raise awareness of everyday habits that help lower the risk for heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and an unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, and other factors increase a person’s risk.
This month, encourage employees to take actions that improve their health and support the well-being of their coworkers. Use the ideas below to help workers build good habits and make healthy choices.
- Encourage employees to move. Promote any exercise-oriented benefits you offer, such as walking trails, an exercise center, biking clubs, or a health club reimbursement. Employees with jobs that keep them seated for much of the day can be encouraged to get up and move each hour.
- Focus on nutrition. Offer discounts on heart-healthy options in the company cafeteria and make sure vending machines are filled with healthy snacks. Encourage employees to improve their eating habits with this month’s LivingRight Meal Tracker wellness activity.
- Share heart-healthy recipes. Post heart-healthy recipes on your intranet. Work with a local health care provider to have a nutritionist present a lunch-and-learn session with healthy eating tips and a cooking demonstration.
- Organize a step contest. Teams of employees can track their steps for the month and compete to see which team compiles the greatest number of steps or maintains the longest streak for meeting personal step goals. Those with disabilities may be able to count minutes moved rather than steps walked or complete another activity that earns points for their team.
- Have employees swap ideas. Encourage employees to share healthy recipes or ideas for moving more. They could post their ideas in a spot on your intranet. Those who participate could be eligible for a heart-healthy prize, like yard games or workout gear.
- Say it with pictures. Employees could also share images of their favorite walking trail or activity.
- Keep everyone informed. Display a heart health poster and post articles on your intranet or in your company newsletter that focus on heart health.
- Set up a health screening event. Partner with a health care provider to offer a screening for cholesterol and blood pressure levels, as well as other key health indicators. You can also encourage employees to visit their physician for a health screening if they work remotely or would rather have it done offsite.
- Help employees stop smoking. Smoking is a significant cause of cardiovascular disease, and you can promote resources that can help employees quit. Use intranet articles, team meetings, and flyers to make employees aware of options available through your health care provider, or share the free resources at www.smokefree.gov.
- Emphasize stress relief. Stress can lead to behavior that harms the heart, including overeating and lack of exercise. Offer a mindfulness program or app that helps employees de-stress, and make employees aware of benefits available through your employee assistance program.
Key to remember: Heart disease costs in the United States are more than $239 billion annually, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Promote heart health in a way that resonates with your employees to support employee well-being and help save on health care costs.
