California reminder applies to all UST operators Inspect early
The California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) shared words of caution around the overfill inspection deadline for underground storage tanks (USTS) coming due later this year. Although the reminder is specifically aimed at state UST owners and operators, it applies to all UST owners. Initial overfill inspections were due October 13, 2018, meaning the 36-month “periodic” inspection is due in 2021. In 2018, many UST operators waited to schedule the inspection near the October deadline, but were met with limited service technician and inspection equipment availability. Because of this, many initial inspections were performed late. This year UST operators are encouraged to act early, to avoid scheduling bottlenecks.
California provided the following two clarifying points regarding specific inspection deadlines:
- Periodic overfill inspections must be completed no later than 36 months after the initial inspection. Therefore, for tanks where the initial inspection was completed before the October 2018, the periodic inspection must now be completed no later than the last day of the same month. For example, an overfill inspection performed in August 2018 must complete the periodic overfill inspection no later than August 31, 2021.
- For those owners or operators who did not meet the October 13, 2018, deadline for the initial overfill inspection must complete the periodic overfill inspection on or before the last day of the month required. Since the initial overfill inspection was required by October 13, 2018, the periodic overfill inspection deadline for all late overfill inspections is October 31, 2021.
