Behind the cheer: Supporting your drivers this holiday season
When people picture the holiday season, they imagine happy families taking time off work and spending time together – eating, drinking, and exchanging gifts. While this does happen, it is also important to recognize those who help make that reality possible for families around the world. Workers in retail, hospitality, transportation, and more all play a part in helping families celebrate the holidays.
At this time of year, drivers tend to feel the need to work longer hours, whether to hit deadlines and make deliveries or to increase their income to provide for their own families. Pair that pressure with shortened daylight hours, and it is essential that you make sure to prioritize your drivers’ health and safety over these next few weeks.
Four ways to support your drivers:
- Recognize their sacrifice. Many drivers are working long hours away from home while the rest of their family may be together. Appreciate this sacrifice, and make sure they know that they are valued.
- Communicate with your drivers. The holidays can bring about mixed emotions for many – especially those experiencing grief, seasonal affective disorder, or financial insecurity. Ask them to talk to their leader (or, if offered, an employee assistance program) if they need any additional support.
- Acknowledge that all these factors may lead to increased fatigue. Whether the result of longer days or sleepless nights, it is important that your drivers understand that they can stop and rest at any time. It is essential that they do not feel unsafe driving due to fatigue or mental distractions.
- Show your appreciation. Holiday pay is a great way to show your appreciation, but it’s not the only way to do that. Other ideas include: potluck or company-provided lunches if your drivers spend time on-site, merchandise from your company store, safety awards and recognition, or even adopting one associate’s family as a company can go a long way in making drivers feel appreciated.
Key to remember: Prioritizing your drivers and recognizing their hard work this holiday season will go a long way in building your relationship with them, improving driver satisfaction.
