Tips for delivering effective safety training
2021-09-03T05:00:00Z
As a supervisor, you probably deliver safety training or hold quick safety meetings. Naturally, you want to maximize the retention and impact of these activities.
Safety meetings work best if everyone actively participates, ideally by sharing their experiences. This makes the session more interesting and increases retention of the information delivered. The following suggestions can help encourage everyone to get involved:
- Ask questions instead of simply giving information. Use open-ended questions that require more than a yes/no answer such as, “What could happen if this procedure isn’t followed?” After posing the question, wait a moment to let people respond. If needed, call on volunteers to answer.
- Ask about personal experiences to help the group understand why the topic is relevant. For example, ask, “Has anyone here fallen off a ladder? What happened?”
- Give everyone a chance to talk. If one crew member is talking too much, invite someone else to speak.
- Never make fun of anyone, especially for asking questions. Even a good-natured joke at someone else’s expense could discourage participation.
- If someone asks a question and you don’t know the answer, don’t guess. Write it down and promise to get back to them.
- Stick to the topic. If questions and comments move off topic, explain that those concerns will be addressed later, either privately or in a future safety meeting.
