Stressed employees? Benefits package must offer solutions to improve worker retention
Employee stress is at a critical point, and in the recent Mercer Marsh Benefits’ 2023 Health on Demand Report, the results stated that 47 percent of employees report feeling stressed.
The crux of this study shows that employees respond positively to employers that show they care about their overall health and well-being.
The results state there is a direct connection between higher benefit levels and employee satisfaction. Namely, employees with 10 or more benefits feel their employer cares about them, are more likely to stay, and feel more confident about being able to afford health care for their family.
Employees should feel psychologically safe
Chronic employee stress can lead to burnt out at work, which can impact aspects such as attendance, productivity, and overall health.
Those surveyed (17,500 in 16 global markets) reported these factors putting them most at risk of workplace burnout:
- 54 percent — work pressure
- 39 percent — poor leadership
- 37 percent — toxic culture
To get to the root of the problem, employees must feel psychologically safe with their employers. This means that employees need to feel comfortable being open when sharing their thoughts, ideas, and problems at work.
However, according to the report, only 58 percent feel free to speak their minds without negative consequences.
Solutions employers should offer
Addressing the causes of workplace stress, offering solutions, and providing support are steps that set a company apart as one that people want to work for and tell their friends about (i.e., employee referrals). This can help attract and retain staff.
The solutions that employers offer can run the gamut depending on company size, location, and industry. What matters is taking steps to help employees, such as:
- Offering comprehensive benefits (health insurance, disability, retirement, etc.)
- Reviewing job descriptions (balance workload and responsibility)
- Being inclusive (everyone belongs)
- Addressing mental health (options like virtual counseling)
Employers that recognize the challenges employees face and strive to find solutions have a better chance at improving worker retention.
Key to remember:Employee retention starts with reducing employee stress through a comprehensive benefits package that addresses their needs.
