First on the accident scene: What should you do?
2021-06-02T05:00:00Z
If an accident occurs, you might be the first person on the scene, or at least the first supervisor on the scene. In such situations, you should take the following steps as quickly as possible:
- Determine if a hazardous situation exists that would prevent approaching the injured person (electrical hazard, chemical spill, etc.) Assess the scene (who is injured, what happened).
- Notify appropriate help (emergency response team, safety manager, 911, etc.) If trained, administer first-aid if necessary.
- Move the victim if he/she is in greater harm by remaining in the current location. Do not move the victim unless staying in place poses a greater risk than being moved.
- Stop others from entering the scene or removing any items.
- Begin to identify any witnesses.
If you have first aid training, administer first-aid as appropriate. Otherwise, immediately contact the trained first aid providers or call your designated emergency phone number to report any injuries.
Before allowing work to resume, make sure the area is safe, cleanup has been conducted, and any hazards which contributed to the injury have been addressed.
