Expert Insights: Don’t hit the snooze button on employee fatigue
The consequences of sleep deprivation range in severity depending on the circumstances. For instance, a fatigued driver faces far deadlier consequences than a fatigued desk worker. When I added a puppy to my household a little over a year ago, she had me up three times a night. It eventually progressed to one trip outside in the middle of the night. Thankfully, she is now an adult dog, and her routine allows me to get a good night’s rest with no trips out in the dead of night.
However, it was horrible when I was sleep-deprived. The days were long, and all I could think of was wanting to take a nap. Thankfully, I was working from home, and my performance didn’t have any real workplace safety implications.
You may be wondering, “What does this have to do with motor carrier safety?” Any employee who works with heavy machinery or performs other duties that affect a company’s safety must always be alert. Lives may depend on it.
Driver fatigue
We know that commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers must follow hours-of-service limits, but it’s hard to know what they do during their 10 hours off. It’s becoming more common for carriers to install dash cams, some of which are cab-facing, to ensure drivers are not nodding off or inattentive while driving.
Nutrition on the road can also affect fatigue. A carb-heavy diet and/or caffeine can cause a driver to figuratively (and hopefully not literally) “crash.”
Others who impact safety
Several positions at the motor carrier impact safety and require individuals to be well rested, such as a technician, yard jockey, material handler, welder, forklift operator, spotter, or dispatcher.
Hours-of-service grid logs or time records aren’t required for these workers unless they also operate a CMV. Still, you could help limit fatigue through administrative controls. Management could keep employees on a preferred shift (e.g., night owls) and limit the length of the shift.
