Employee Handout — Pesticide Safety Overview
2021-03-15T05:00:00Z
Pesticide safety rules may apply to you if you work on a farm or in a greenhouse, nursery, or tasks such as carrying nursery stock, repotting plants, watering, or other cultivation or harvesting activities. They may even apply if you’re required to work with or around pesticides as part of your daily job duties.
How can I protect myself?
If pesticides are used where you work, you must be familiar with basic pesticide safety information:
- Pesticides may be present on or in plants, soil, irrigation water, or drifting from nearby applications.
- Prevent pesticides from entering your body by:
- Following directions and/or signs about keeping out of treated or restricted areas.
- Washing before eating, drinking, using chewing gum or tobacco, or using the toilet.
- Wearing work clothing that protects the body from pesticide residues.
- Washing/showering with soap and water, shampoo hair and put on clean clothes after work.
- Washing work clothes separately from other clothes before wearing them again.
- Washing immediately in the nearest clean water if pesticides are spilled or sprayed on the body and, as soon as possible, showering, shampooing, and changing into clean clothes.
Your employer
Your employer is required to warn you about hazards associated with your job before you begin work. In addition, they are required to provide you training and documents, including SDSs, that can best help you protect yourself.
