EHS Monthly Round Up - June 2024
Hi everyone! Welcome to the monthly news roundup video, where we’ll go over the most impactful environmental, health, and safety news. Please view the content links in the transcript for more information about the topics I’ll be covering today. Let’s get started!
Our top story is OSHA’s proposed heat illness prevention rule. On June 11, it reached the Office of Management and Budget for review. This review typically takes up to 90 days, at which time the rule will be published in the Federal Register and stakeholders will have an opportunity to comment on it.
The comment period for OSHA’s proposed emergency response rule has once again been extended. Comments are now due July 22nd. You may recall that the proposed rule would replace the existing Fire Brigades standard. It provides updated health and safety protections for certain emergency responders, among other revisions.
June is National Safety Month and this year’s campaign raised awareness of the leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths in the workplace. The National Safety Council focused on a specific safety topic each week of June, including safety engagement; roadway safety; risk reduction; and slips, trips, and falls.
With the increased use of artificial intelligence in the workplace, the Department of Labor has released a set of principles and best practices for developers and employers to follow. It provides guidance to consider throughout the AI lifecycle, from design to use to auditing.
As part of its Heat Prevention campaign, OSHA has added several resources to help keep workers safe. The new resources include a wallet card, brochure, and checklist that educate employers and workers on heat hazards and what to do in case of emergency.
And finally, turning to environmental news, EPA launched an online Chemical Data Reporting portal to centralize all reporting resources in one location. It contains all CDR guidance documents and other training materials, including reporting instructions, fact sheets, and EPA responses to industry questions. The 2024 chemical data report submission period runs from June 1st to September 30th and covers activities during the calendar years 2020 through 2023.
Thanks for tuning in to the monthly news roundup. We’ll see you next month!
