Driver trainers set the tone

A new driver’s first impressions of your organization, including your safety culture, often come from the driver trainer.
That’s why it’s critical that the driver-trainer role is filled by the right person.
Driver-trainer wish list
The job description of a driver trainer should include the minimum qualifications you are willing to accept for the position. The following are some common standards set by the industry:
- Has a minimum of three years of driving experience
- Has driven in all seasons and terrain that could be encountered by your drivers
- Is recommended by a driver supervisor
- Has a strong work performance
- Has a positive attitude, both professionally and personally
- Has a clean safety record for the past three years, including:
- No moving violations
- No crashes
- No injuries
- Possesses the skills and desire necessary to be a good trainer, including:
- Patience
- Ability to evaluate and document a trainee’s progress
- A comprehensive understanding of the topics presented to trainees (e.g., defensive driving, regulations, vehicle inspection, workplace safety)
- A familiarity with the company’s operations (e.g., dispatch, commodities, vehicle maintenance program, load securement, paperwork)
If a driver trainer is not meeting expectations, it’s important to address the issues and possibly find a replacement. Controlling mixed messages during orientation and the first few weeks of employment may keep a new hire from quitting or, worse, thinking unsafe behaviors are acceptable.
