Dont wait too long
Don’t wait too long
Being labeled a procrastinator carries a negative connotation. It is usually associated with an activity being put off too long and not being done well.
There are some people who say the added pressure of procrastination helps them work at their peak level. I am not one of those people. Don’t get me wrong — I’ve procrastinated plenty, but it doesn’t always go well for me.
Procrastination at the movies
A few years ago, I was given two free movie passes as a promotional item. The email with the link to redeem my tickets sat in my inbox for a long time. I told myself I had plenty of time before the offer expired, and I’d get to it when my family and I decided to go to a movie. When the day came that we finally did go to a movie, I pressed the “click to redeem” button on my smartphone while waiting in the ticket line. I assumed I’d get a code to give to the ticket person, but to my surprise I was taken to a website where I needed to fill out a form and wait for the request to be processed.
While we waited, my family became more and more impatient, worrying that we might not make the start of the movie, or worse — we might not have time to get our popcorn. I began to feel anxious and while I could have just paid for the tickets, I had come so far ... I simply had to wait.
Thankfully, my code arrived via another email, and I was able to redeem my prize. And, we were in our seats for the beginning of the movie, popcorn in hand.
Business consequences
So, how does this apply to your business? Certain activities — such as tax filing and vehicle registration — take the back burner while you deal with more immediate issues. But, eventually, taxes and registration need to be attended to as well. If you wait too long, however, you may run into roadblocks or delays.
For example, a carrier recently electronically filed its Form 2290 to pay the heavy vehicle use tax (HVUT) on newly acquired vehicles. The system allowed for the tax filing and payment but did not provide a Schedule 1 showing proof of payment. Unfortunately, the IRS site that processes HVUT filings was in the middle of a 10-day shutdown for maintenance and updates. This caused a delay in registering the vehicles with the state licensing office until the Schedule 1 could be supplied. The carrier simply had to wait.
I’m not accusing this carrier of procrastinating; delays happen. Taking care of tax filing or vehicle registration — or whatever the activity may be — sooner than later may save you some anxiety and lost time for your business.
