U.S. recognizes September as National Preparedness Month
Each September is National Preparedness Month (NPM) in the United States, a month-long campaign to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies. The 2021 NPM theme, “Prepare to Protect,” focuses on all aspects of preparedness for individuals, families, businesses, and communities.
Recognizing NPM reinforces the importance of planning and preparedness common in the EHS profession. In the workplace, we are reminded to take the following steps:
1. Identify your risks. Know what disasters are most likely to affect your business.
2. Develop a workplace emergency action plan and be sure employees know it.
3. Create a crisis communication plan to keep in contact with customers, suppliers, and employees during and after a disaster.
4. Test and practice your preparedness plans.
5. Have emergency supplies available at the workplace.
6. Check your insurance policies to ensure you have enough coverage.
7. Work with and listen to local officials.
Underscoring the importance of preparedness, on August 31, 2021, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released the WMO Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes (1970–2019). The report assesses impacts to human life and economics from major meteorologic events during the last 50 years. Of interest to those in active preparedness roles, WMO highlights the positive impact planning efforts have made in reducing the number of human lives lost. The report details “The number of disasters has increased by a factor of five over the 50-year period, driven by climate change, more extreme weather and improved reporting. But, thanks to improved early warnings and disaster management, the number of deaths decreased almost three-fold.”
