U.S. DOL announces plan to update the unemployment insurance system
In August, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced plans to modernize and reform the unemployment insurance system.
While unemployment has helped prevent a deeper recession during the pandemic, the pressure on the system called to light issues that need to be addressed and resolved. The DOL states it will start with money allocated as a part of the American Rescue Plan Act.
Key focal points include:
- Preventing and detecting unemployment fraud
- Promoting equal unemployment access
- Ensuring timely benefit payments
- Reducing backlogs
“The pandemic underscored the need for modernization of the 53 different systems that administer unemployment insurance benefits in the United States, and it exposed significant vulnerabilities in state technology to criminals looking for an opportunity,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh.
The DOL announced additional strategies for improving the unemployment insurance system, including:
- Direct technical assistance
- Tools to address immediate fraud concerns
- Updates to antiquated state technology
