Transportation Monthly Round Up - August 2025
Welcome back and thanks for viewing if it's your first time. Let's take a look at what's happened over the past month.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has updated its waiver related to medical certification for commercial drivers. Originally issued on July 14, 2025, the waiver allowed CDL and CLP holders, as well as motor carriers, to use a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate as proof of medical certification for up to 15 days after the exam.
This updated waiver now extends that period to 60 days. This means drivers and carriers can continue using the paper certificate for a longer time while waiting for electronic records to be processed.
FMCSA also strongly recommends that Medical Examiners:
- Continue submitting exam results electronically, and
- Provide drivers with a paper certificate at the time of their medical exam.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has officially canceled plans for a federal speed limiter mandate on certain commercial motor vehicles. The proposed rule would have required speed-limiting devices on new vehicles over 26,000 pounds, including trucks, buses, school buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles.
According to the DOT, the decision to halt the rulemaking was based on:
- Insufficient data to show clear safety or economic benefits, and
- Uncertainty around the estimated costs and overall impact.
As we roll into the latter half of 2025, it’s a good time to take stock of how roadside inspections are shaping up for hazardous materials transportation. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s mid-year data gives us a clear snapshot of the most common hazmat violations, and where carriers and drivers might want to focus their attention.
- Improper securement of hazmat (177.834(a))
- Missing hazmat registration certificate (107.620(b))
- Damaged or illegible placards (172.516(c)(6))
- Missing shipping papers (177.817(a))
- Improperly prepared hazmat (177.801)
That’s it for this month’s round up. Stay safe, and thanks for watching.
