Pre-employment (drug only)
- You must pass before performing any safety-sensitive functions (including driving)
Post-accident
- Required when there is a fatality
- Required if you receive a citation for a moving violation, and
- Someone is taken from the scene for medical treatment, or
- One of the vehicles is towed from the scene
Random
- Testing is unannounced and occurs several times throughout the year
- Once notified of a test, you must immediately go for testing
Reasonable suspicion
- Required if a supervisor believes your appearance, behavior, speech, and/or body odor may indicate alcohol or drug use
- Observations must be made by a trained supervisor
Return-to-duty
- After failing a test and completing the return-to-duty process, you must pass a return-to-duty test before returning to any safety-sensitive functions (including driving)
Follow-up
- After failing a test and completing the return-to-duty process, you are subject to at least six follow-up tests in the first year after returning to duty
- Follow-up testing may continue for up to five years
