Single-use plastic leaving public lands by 2032
On June 8, 2022, the Secretary of the Interior issued an Order which addresses the reduction, sale, and distribution of single-use plastic products and packaging on public lands such as National Parks. The goal is to phase out single-use plastic products on Department-managed lands by 2032. This includes plastic and polystyrene food and beverage containers, bottles, straws, cups, cutlery, and disposable plastic bags. Businesses that supply products or services involving these plastics will likely need to develop alternatives.
Within 270 days of the Order issuance, there will be draft sustainable procurement plans submitted. These plans will include:
- Schedules and targets to make yearly progress toward dropping the procurement, sale, and distribution of single-use plastic products from present levels;
- Schedules for updates to attainment and procurement policies and practices to lessen single-use plastic products;
- Yearly progress reporting;
- Schedules for reporting on how to phase out single use plastic products by 2032;
- Analysis of substitutes to single-use plastic products, like compostable or biodegradable materials, or 100 percent recyclable or recycled materials;
- Recognized opportunities to move public behavior to decrease single-use plastic products, like installing further water fountains and reusable water bottle filling stations;
Less than 10 percent of the plastic that has ever been produced has been recycled. The Department of Interior is trying to change that. As of 2022, the Department manages over 480 million acres of public lands, 2.5 billion acres of the Outer Continental Shelf, and 750 million acres of marine national monuments.
This Order is part of Biden’s Executive Order 14057 which strongly encourages a climate- and sustainability-focused Federal workforce. The Department is not alone in pursuing an overall single-use plastic phase-out. Small and large companies are doing the same. This trend currently impacts and will continue to impact producers and distributors of single-use plastic.
