OSHA to promote safety for young workers at the 2024 Construction Ready CareerEXPO
Are you attending this year's event?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is sending a group of representatives to participate in this year’s Construction Ready CareerEXPO in Atlanta, which is one of the largest student conferences in the Southeast.
The CareerEXPO is beneficial both to students and employers
The students get to learn about exciting career opportunities in the construction industry. This benefits employers, as it may help bridge the gap with the skilled labor shortage.
With OSHA participating in this year’s event, the students (and future workforce) will also be getting an introduction to the importance of workplace safety. This can help foster a positive attitude toward safety from the very beginning.
"Connecting with the thousands of students who walk through the doors and sharing the value of job safety is exactly what our OSHA team is passionate about," said OSHA’s Regional Administrator in Atlanta. “It is a great way for students to explore careers in skilled trades.”
The career expo also gives OSHA an opportunity to partner with other industry leaders.
The CareerEXPO is expected to bring in over 9,000 students
Taking place February 22nd-23rd, 2024 , the event will focus on careers in construction and related fields such as safety, highway construction, electrical contracting, energy, drywall, tile, roofing and more.
Exhibits will feature machinery and tools, and participants will be on hand to answer questions about career options and skills needed in various construction industry fields.
According to Construction Ready, the event is the “perfect opportunity for your company, trade association, or trade union to connect and brand with the next generation of construction workers and leaders.”
The CareerEXPO acts as a simulated construction site where all attendees must wear a hard hat, safety glasses, long pants, and closed-toe shoes .
OSHA’s commitment to protecting young workers
Attending the CareerEXPO is a strategic decision that helps support OSHA’s Young Worker Initiative, which provides information and resources to teenagers, parents, educators, and employers to ensure safe and rewarding work experiences for teenagers and young adults.
OSHA has posted the following guidelines as employer responsibilities for young workers:
- Understand and comply with the relevant federal and state child labor laws. For example, these laws prohibit youth from working certain hours and from performing dangerous/hazardous work.
- Ensure that young workers receive training to recognize hazards and are competent in safe work practices.
- Implement a mentoring or buddy system for new young workers. Have an adult or experienced young worker available to answer questions.
- Ensure that equipment operated by young workers is both legal and safe for them to use. Employers should label equipment that young workers are not allowed to operate.
- Tell young workers what to do if they get hurt on the job.
Key to remember: OSHA will participate in the 2024 Construction Ready CareerEXPO to inspire the next generation of workers to consider a career in construction and to embrace workplace safety and health.
