New drug testing form required this month
If you have drivers subject to DOT drug testing rules, be aware that a new drug testing form will be required by the end of August.
The Federal Drug Testing Custody and Control Form (CCF), which is used for every DOT-mandated drug test, was amended in August 2020. Motor carriers were given one year, however — until August 30, 2021 — to begin using the new version.
Among the nearly 20 changes appearing on the form:
- More space to record the driver’s CDL number and state, which are required so the results can be reported to the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- New fields to account for saliva testing in addition to urine, even though saliva testing is not yet allowed for commercial drivers (the DOT must first update the rules in 49 CFR Part 40).
- Removal of the instructions from the back of the form. The instructions are available on a government website instead.
Be sure the new form is used for every DOT drug test performed on or after August 30, 2021. The new form will be available at JJKeller.com.
CDL numbers are required
Did you know that a driver’s CDL number and issuing state must appear on each CCF used as of January 6, 2020? This is required even if using an older version of the CCF, which asked only for the driver’s social security number or employee ID number.
Entering the CDL and state will ensure that the driver’s test results are accurately reported to the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, if required. If no CDL information is included on the CCF, the medical review officer should contact the driver or the driver’s employer to request it.
Key to remember: The form used to document drivers’ DOT drug tests has been updated. Use of the new form is required no later than August 30, 2021.
