Last chance to fix problems before Roadcheck 2024
2024-05-06T05:00:00Z
The clock is ticking. International Roadcheck kicks off on May 14, and runs to May 16. Once the clock strikes the zero hour, it will be too late to fix most issues your fleet may have. Here is a checklist to help you make final preparations:
Drivers:
- Verify drivers are fully qualified. This involves looking at driver qualification files and verifying that nothing is expired or on the verge of expiring.
- Remind drivers to always have their credentials with them and to keep them current. For a CDL driver, this means the CDL is current, and the latest medical information is on file with the state. For a non-CDL driver, this means carrying their license and a valid medical card.
- Verify that drivers are complying with the hour-of-service regulations (limits and logs). Review recent in-house auditing results and roadside inspection violations and counsel and correct drivers with recent violations. The logs the drivers create over the next week will be the ones scrutinized during Roadcheck, so make sure drivers are logging correctly.
- Remind drivers that the week leading up to Roadcheck is NOT the time to bend the hours-of-service limits and logging regulations.
- Remind drivers to drive compliantly, safely, and defensively. Many drivers end up going through a roadside inspection due to a traffic violation. The problem with these inspections is that the driver already has a violation before the inspection even starts.
- As drugs and alcohol are one of the focus areas for 2024, remind drivers of the requirements in these areas (no drugs or alcohol in the vehicle, absolute sobriety, etc.).
Vehicles:
- Verify that all vehicles are current on scheduled maintenance, including the periodic (normally annual) inspection. This will require looking through your maintenance records.
- Remind drivers on the location of the proof of periodic inspection. The proof can be a copy of the inspection report or a decal. The key is the driver will need to show the proof to the officer during a roadside inspection.
- Verify that none of the vehicles on the road have known defects on them (if one does, get it repaired as soon as possible).
- Remind drivers to conduct pretrip, enroute, and post-trip inspections. As part of this, refresh drivers on the best way to conduct these inspections.
- Immediately deal with any defect a driver reports.
- As the tractor protection system is one of the focuses in 2024, remind drivers to be checking this by doing a pump down check (the button popout porting in the LAB brake check). Also instruct drivers on the method the officers use to check the tractor protection system (they have the driver remove the emergency gladhand when the trailer supply button is in, to see if the trailer brakes apply automatically and the tractor protection valve closes, shutting off air to the trailer).
Key to Remember: If executed correctly, these last-minute activities can increase the odds of having an uneventful International Roadcheck in 2024.
