HAZWOPER — The hazards you don't see!
When it comes to flammable liquids, it’s the vapors, rather than the liquid itself, that can irritate your eyes and overall health.
Here’s how it works ...
When liquids spill onto a surface, they release vapors almost immediately and won’t stop until you remove the liquid. It can make for a deadly situation, especially if the liquid reaches an ignition source. That’s why your immediate response to a spill is crucial.
Watch for pooling areas!
Flammable vapors may pool in low spots, such as:
- Cabinet bases
- Basements
- Drains
- Sewers
- Tanks
- Sump pumps
- Pits
Spill cleanup
If you respond to spill cleanups, you need to be quick and careful! While there may be a lot racing through your head during an emergency event, you can’t forget to protect yourself first. See the list below!
- Wear fully encapsulating, vapor protective clothing for spills and leaks with no fire.
- Do not touch or walk through spilled material.
- Stop the leak if you can do it without risk.
- Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements, or confined areas.
- Eliminate all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks, flames, in immediate area).
If you respond to releases in your own facility, be aware of volatile, flammable, and heavier than air vapors while planning your response. They pose even more danger than lighter vapors!
