HAZWASTE — There’s no time to waste!
Resolve to be prepared for waste spills...
Where there’s a possibility for a spill, there’s always a plan! However, to be effective, the plan must be carried out to perfection. That means wherever a fire, explosion, or other emergency happens, you must know exactly what to do, and when!
Here’s what the plan should tell you about:
What YOU should do: The plan tells you how you should react if there is a fire, explosion, or other hazardous material release.
The evacuation plan: The plan provides the evacuation procedure for facility personnel where there is a possibility that evacuation could be necessary:
- The signal(s) that will tell you to begin evacuation,
- Evacuation routes, and
- Alternate evacuation routes (in cases where the primary routes could be blocked by fires or releases of hazardous waste).
Can you hear/see it?
Most companies use alarms to tell employees that they should evacuate a certain area or take specific action.
You must be able to recognize these alarms by paying close attention during emergency drills or other emergency scenario situations.
Likewise, emergency scenarios and drills must also be able to teach you:
- Where contingent responses or evacuations procedures are in place, and
- What you are expected to do in response to the alarm systems.
