HAZCOM — See if this fits!
Seeing is believing when it comes to safety! When you wear eye and face protection, you increase your chances of making it home safe at the end of the day. However, there’s more to your personal protective equipment (PPE) than its ability to protect you on the job. You already know that PPE protects you, but you also need to know how it does so.
Consider the fit
When your employer selects PPE, they likely consider comfort and fit. Fact: Poorly fitted eye and face protection will not provide you with the necessary protection. If your PPE doesn’t fit comfortably, you need to report it to your supervisor immediately.
Here are more facts about fitting eye and face protection:
- Goggles and safety spectacle fitting should be done by someone skilled in the procedure.
- Eye and face protection form a protective seal around the eyes and nose when they are fitted properly. That seal keeps the hazards out!
- Welding helmets that fit properly won’t fall off your head during work operations.
- Devices with adjustable features don’t move position on your head/face when they are correctly fitted for comfort.
Training
You were likely trained when your employer assigned you PPE. Training is essential if you’re going to stay safe on the job. If you wear PPE, your employer must train you on:
- When PPE is necessary
- What PPE is necessary
- How to properly don, doff, and adjust PPE
- How to care, maintain, and dispose of your PPE
Keep top of mind, your training needs to be done in a language that you understand . If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The more you know, the better!
