Expert Insights: Sound advice on properly using hearing protection
When I was younger, I rarely used hearing protection when using power tools, chain saws, or lawn mowers. Today, my hearing isn’t as good as it used to be so I’m diligent about using hearing protection, and using it properly. Hearing loss is preventable but also irreversible, with permanent consequences.
A coworker with decades of safety experience commented that he rarely saw employees inserting foam earplugs correctly. Incorrect insertion reduces the effectiveness and employees could suffer hearing loss despite using the plugs.
Proper technique
Inserting a foam earplug seems simple, but trainers know there’s a specific technique. The steps include pulling back the top of the ear with the opposite hand to straighten the ear canal, which my coworker rarely observed. Another step involves holding the plug in place while it expands. Workers might skip that step or fail to hold the plug throughout full expansion.
Hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illnesses. OSHA classifies hearing loss as an illness because it happens over time. Unfortunately, employees usually don’t notice the damage until their next hearing test, and then it’s too late.
Now that I’m older (and have experienced some hearing loss), I use hearing protection even if noise levels are below 85 decibels. Although my hearing loss is not severe (though my wife might disagree), I see no reason to risk losing any more. My father needed a hearing aid, and I don’t want to end up needing one.
Do it right every time
If your employees wear foam plugs for hearing protection, make sure they insert the plugs correctly every time. Even if you demonstrate the technique and have them practice during annual training, they might start taking shortcuts.
Watch your workers at the start of a shift or after lunch to see if they’re following all the necessary steps. If they’re taking shortcuts, point out that spending an extra 30 seconds to insert foam plugs correctly could save them from getting fitted for a hearing aid in the future.
