Environmental news on TRI and heavy vehicle proposal
Two TRI news highlights
A couple Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) items to report:
RY 2021 TRI reporting instructions — EPA posted its TRI reporting instructions for reporting year 2021. Reports are due by July 1, 2022, per 40 CFR 372. The instructions offer four important changes for reporting year (RY) 2021, which relate to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the source reduction activity, Section 6.1 transfers, and de minimis levels for three substances.
RY 2020 TRI National Analysis — EPA’s analysis shows that in RY 2020, a total of 21,022 facilities submitted TRI reports (a 1.7 percent decrease from RY 2019). They reported managing 28.33B pounds of toxic substances, including 3.04B pounds that were disposed of or released. These two figures are a 7.7 percent and 10.6 percent drop, respectively, from RY 2019.
Agency proposes to set heavy vehicles on path to zero emissions
EPA announced a proposed rule in the March 28th Federal Register to set new, more stringent standards to reduce emissions from heavy-duty vehicles and engines starting in model year (MY) 2027. The proposal is intended to significantly reduce emissions of smog- and soot-forming nitrogen oxides from heavy-duty gasoline and diesel engines.
When final, the rule would implement more stringent GHG standards for certain commercial vehicle categories, including school buses, transit buses, commercial delivery trucks, and short-haul tractors. The proposal also includes limited amendments to the regulations that implement air emission standards for other sectors (e.g., light-duty vehicles; marine diesel engines; locomotives; and various types of nonroad engines, vehicles, and equipment).
