OSHA and NCCCO raise the bar for crane safety with new, 2-year agreement
That’s right. OSHA and the NCCCO have officially teamed up to better protect workers who operate cranes. The news was published on OSHA’s website on November 28th, 2023.
"Workers who operate or work near cranes can face serious and potentially life-threatening hazards if they are not properly trained or protected," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health.
"Our alliance with [NCCCO] focuses on training workers and working with employers to make safety and health a core value by implementing best industry practices to ensure workers' safety."
OSHA’s Alliance Program is a cooperative agreement that enables the agency to develop voluntary, collaborative working relationships with organizations that are committed to workplace safety and health.
Working together to enhance safety
The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) is a highly respected industry leader for construction and crane operation.
The NCCCO aims to enhance lifting equipment safety, reduce workplace risk, and improve performance records by providing independent training, assessments, and certifications for crane operators.
With the new two-year alliance agreement, OSHA and the NCCCO will partner to provide certified crane operators with additional information and resources. The goal is to reduce and exposure and prevent incidents related to the four most construction workplace hazards:
- Falls
- Caught-In or caught-between objects or machinery
- Struck-By objects or equipment
- Electrocution
These four hazards are known as the Focus Four hazards in the construction industry, and typically contribute to the majority of incidents and fatalities.
The road map to success
OSHA’s alliances create an opportunity for industry leaders to help improve the safety of workers. They do this by helping raise awareness of OSHA's initiatives and assisting with outreach, communication, training, and education.
“It is an honor to further develop our relationship with OSHA in this manner and we look forward to making our industry safer,” said Chief Executive Officer for NCCCO.
According to the press release, some of the ways that the alliance will work towards better protecting crane operators include:
- Using data and reviewing trends to develop safety alerts;
- Providing updates on OSHA's load-handling regulations and enforcement;
- Assisting employers and operators in complying with OSHA regulations;
- Developing relationships between the NCCCO's test sites and OSHA's field offices to provide training opportunities for crane operators and OSHA personnel.
