Comments due soon on risk management rule for NMP
EPA is holding environmental justice consultations on the development of risk management actions for N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The consultations will provide information on the risk management requirements under the Toxics Substances Control Act (TSCA), findings from EPA’s final risk evaluations, and tools available to manage the unreasonable risks from NMP. Specifically, they will focus on how possible actions will affect minority populations and low-income populations. The consultation period will go through August 27, 2021.
Manufacturers use NMP in the production of petrochemicals, electronics, plastic materials, and resins. NMP is also used for solvent cleaning and the surface treatment of metals, textiles, resins, and plastics.
While EPA’s December 2020 final risk evaluation on NMP did not find the chemical presents an unreasonable risk to the environment, EPA did find that some uses present “unreasonable risk to workers.” EPA also found NMP may pose an unreasonable risk to consumers. TSCA requires EPA to develop a plan to reduce or eliminate those unreasonable risks. The agency has until December 2021 to propose and take public comments on any risk management actions.
