Change is on the horizon
As 2020 is quickly coming to a close, it seems appropriate to look back at the events of the past year. COVID-19 clearly stole the show, causing disruption and creating distress in a way I never thought I’d see during my lifetime. While 2020 — the year that seemingly wasn’t — may not have turned out as we expected, some important events came to be within the industry.
From a safety perspective, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) began administering its Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse in January, and September brought about changes to the hours-of-service regulations. On the operations side, mostly steady as she goes. Although, in a positive turn of events, after several consecutive years of confusion and enforcement delays, the Unified Carrier Registration enrollment got back on track.
We rounded out the year with a presidential election. While it is unclear right now what impact the election will have on the transportation industry, we have to be patient to see how things unfold.
In the midst of it all, though, one thing is certain: change.
