Business and state environmental management partnership success story
An environmental management system or EMS encourages an organization to constantly improve environmental performance. Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) is essentially helping facilities do just that with their free consulting team, Technical Resources for Engineering Efficiency (TREE). This non-regulatory and free consulting team performs the following, among other actions:
- Assesses compressed air systems for leaks;
- Uses thermal imaging to find issues in equipment and isolates weak spots in temperature-controlled areas;
- Uses equipment to measure how much water is flowing through different parts of an operation to make a water balance for a facility;
- Assesses the safety of chemical use to find possible alternatives; and
- Partners with other organizations to give subsidized training to help lower material waste.
Romac Industries Inc. is a great example of an environmental management success story. This Washington steel fitting manufacturing facility partnered with Ecology. Their goal was to use Ecology grant funding to lower waste generation, maintain product consistency, and improve worker safety on their passivation line.
In the reengineered process, Romac set up a counter-current flow where acidic rinse tank water could circulate back into a process tank. This effectually transferred reusable acidic plating solution back into the passivation process while guaranteeing rinse tank acid concentrations stayed low. This allowed process tank solutions to last longer. It also decreased the generation of spent acid waste.
This was only the first step of many toward their success. They hope to add an ion exchange system to allow consistent water quality throughout the process. This will decrease waste by as much as 50 percent. Some of their overall achievements to date with their Ecology partnerships include:
- Nearly 50 percent reduction in waste (64,000 to 30,000 lbs) the first year,
- $50,000 per year in savings,
- Product quality improvement, and
- Greater process control.
Due to their work, Romac was awarded the most valuable pollution prevention Multimedia Award by the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable.
Washington is not the only state to offer environmental management support. Check with your state to see what help and programs they offer.
Key to remember: States can offer help in various ways with environmental management.
