Add some spice to your wellness message
In addition to being pumpkin spice season, fall is virus prevention time, and there’s a chance that employees have gotten tired of hearing about both.
You can’t do much about pumpkin spice messaging, but you do have control over wellness communication. To make sure important messages about virus prevention strategies are heard, spice things up:
Display new reminders. Handwashing is an effective way to stop the spread of germs, but it’s easy to fall out of the habit of doing it the right way. Grab attention with updated posters and signs that remind workers to wash their hands regularly and to scrub their hands vigorously for 20 seconds.
Motivate managers to set an example. It’s no fun to be shorthanded when workers are out sick. Remind managers that when they take steps to prevent viruses, they are encouraging staff members to do what they can to stay healthy. Likewise, employees can be reminded that when they wash their hands, clean commonly touched surfaces, and get vaccinated, they are setting a positive example for family members.
Share the why. One reason to get COIVD-19 and flu shots every year is to avoid spreading the virus to older adults or others who are at higher risk of complications. Sharing a personal motivation for making time to get these vaccinations can motivate others to take that step. Vaccination can be a controversial topic, but if workers are shying away because of their schedule, sharing a personal reason can remind them why it’s important to make time.
Make it easy and enjoyable. An on-site vaccination clinic can allow employees to more easily work a COVID-19 and flu shot into their day. To make it enjoyable, offer a reward such as a small healthy treat (trail mix, mixed nuts, or an apple, for example). A cup of pumpkin spice coffee might also do the trick.
The pumpkin spice trend might fade with time, but cold, flu, and COVID-19 prevention tips are too important to go out of style. To enhance their appeal this season, add a dash of spice.
Key to remember: Updating your messaging can make employees aware of important wellness information.
