Virtual carrier fitness session coming to a screen near you
2024-06-20T05:00:00Z
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will host two public virtual listening sessions concerning an updated methodology to determine when a motor carrier isn’t fit to operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. Each virtual session will allow public participants to make statements directly to the panel. The FMCSA will also accept written comments sent to the public docket by mail or via www.regulations.gov by August 7, 2024, using docket number FMCSA-2022-0003.
Discussion points
The FMCSA is largely looking for public discussion on:
- Issues with the current Safety Fitness Determination (SFD) system, including:
- The three-tiered rating system (Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory, Conditional), versus • Changing to a proposed single rating only when a carrier is deemed Unfit.
- Using FMCSA’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) and inspection data;
- Incorporating driver behavior into SFD ratings; and
- Adjusting the weights given to certain violations, including:
- Increasing the weight of unsafe driving violations.
