Transportation Monthly Round Up - December 2024
This year’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) event ran from July 7-13, 2024, focusing on reckless, careless, and/or dangerous driving. CVSA schedules this safe-driving awareness campaign every year to educate drivers and create safer roadways across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
The top infractions of Operation Safe Driver Week 2024 were speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, and texting or using a handheld device. CMV drivers alone were issued 1,723; 908; and 206 warnings/tickets/citations for each, respectively.
The FMCSA has denied a petition from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) on missing rear impact guard (rear bumper) certification labels. The current regulations require that the manufacturer of a trailer with a rating of 10,001 pounds or more attach a certification label to the rear bumper to verify compliance.
If the label is missing during a roadside inspection, the officer can issue a violation. While the petition was being considered, CVSA had instructed officers to not cite trailers for a missing label.
Now that the petition has been denied, officers may return to issuing violations. If you receive such a violation, you must work with the trailer manufacturer to get a replacement label.
A long-promised revamp of the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program is coming soon, according to the FMCSA. In late November, the agency announced that it was finalizing changes from the first proposed in early 2023, with a few tweaks based on public feedback.
The FMCSA says it “will follow up in the coming months with the anticipated date for the launch of the new system.” Motor carriers may continue to use the CSA “preview” website to see how the changes would affect them.
Some of the changes at a high level include the following:
- Reorganized and updated Safety Categories, now Compliance Categories,
- Consolidated violations severity weights of a 1 or 2 versus 1 through 10,
- Improved intervention thresholds to address the riskiest carriers sooner, and
- Greater focus on recent violations.
