Pesticide tolerances set for ethalfluralin and deltamethrin
In early April 2023 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set tolerances for residues of deltamethrin in or on certain raw agricultural commodities. This rule went into effect on April 4, 2023. The tolerances are:
- Vegetable, legume, pulse, bean, dried shelled, except soybean, subgroup 6–22E set to 0.07 parts per million (ppm) each; and
- Vegetable, legume, pulse, pea, dried shelled, subgroup 6–22F also set to 0.07 ppm each.
There was no evidence of immunotoxicity in the available studies with deltamethrin. Deltamethrin is not expected to pose a cancer risk to humans.
Ethalfluralin
The following week, EPA set tolerances for residues of ethalfluralin in or on certain raw agricultural commodities. This rule went into effect on April 10, 2023. The tolerances are:
- Dill dried and fresh leaves, hemp seed, peanut, rapeseed subgroup 20A, soybean, stevia dried and fresh leaves, sunflower subgroup 20B, vegetable cucurbit group 9 set to 0.05 ppm each;
- Vegetable, legume, pulse, bean, dried shelled, except soybean, subgroup 6–22 set to 0.05 ppm each;
- Vegetable, legume, pulse, pea, dried shelled, subgroup 6–22F set to 0.05 ppm each; and
- Onion bulb subgroup 3–07A and vegetable tuberous and corm subgroup 1C set to 0.01 ppm each.
Certain tolerances were also removed since they were deemed unnecessary. A refined cancer dietary assessment of ethalfluralin was conducted. It resulted in a cancer risk estimate for adults of 1 × 10-6. EPA considers this outcome to be a negligible cancer risk.
Based on the medical studies involved in the aggregate risk assessments and determination of safety for both pesticides, EPA concludes that there is a reasonable certainty that no harm will result to the general population, or to infants and children from aggregate exposure to deltamethrin or ethalfluralin residues. Both final rules may impact you if you are an agricultural producer, food manufacturer, or pesticide manufacturer.
Key to remember: Pesticide tolerances for ethalfluralin and deltamethrin went into effect in early April 2023.
